Palakya, or Spinach (Spinacia oleracea), is a leafy green vegetable used in Ayurveda for its cooling and purgative properties. Modern research highlights its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits.
Botanical name: Spinacia oleracea. Also known as: Spinach, Palak, Palakya, Chhurika, Kshurapatrika, Palong/Palong Shaak, Palakhani Bhaji, Paalakya, Palakh, Paalak, Vaasaiyilakīrai, Pasalai, Mathubucchali, Palak.

Dosage
Fresh Leaf Juice: 20–40 ml once or twice daily, ideally mixed with honey or ginger juice. Cooked Greens: 75–100 g of steamed or sautéed spinach consumed 3–5 times a week. Dried Powder: 1–3 g of organic spinach leaf powder mixed into water or smoothies, best taken in the morning. Extract Capsules: 250–500 mg twice daily after meals. Spinach Capsule: 1-2 capsules or as per requirement. Spinach Juice: 1-2 teaspoons or as per requirement.

Contraindications
- Kidney Stones: Individuals with kidney stones, especially calcium oxalate stones, should limit spinach intake.
- Raw Spinach: Excess raw spinach consumption may cause bloating, gas, constipation, or Vata imbalance. Ayurveda prefers cooked spinach to avoid digestion problems and increased Vata.
- Infants: Infants under 6 months should avoid high-nitrate spinach juice.
- Medications: Those on warfarin or other anticoagulants need consistent spinach consumption and medical supervision due to the vitamin K content.
- Oxalate Overload: Excessive raw intake may contribute to calcium oxalate kidney stones in susceptible individuals.
- Pregnant women should limit raw spinach juice to 20 ml daily and combine it with vitamin C sources.
- Kidney stone formers should use boiled spinach (to reduce soluble oxalates) and monitor intake under medical guidance.
- Green leafy vegetables like Palak should not be consumed along with milk, as per Ayurveda.
