Dosage

Preparation methods

Contraindications
- Avoid consuming bottle gourd juice if it tastes bitter, as it can be poisonous due to the presence of toxic compounds called cucurbitacins.
- Regular consumption of bottle gourd juice may cause digestive discomfort like nausea or diarrhea, especially if the digestive fire (Agni) is weak.
- Contraindicated in severe kidney disease due to its diuretic effect; monitor electrolytes if consuming.
- Use with caution if you have low blood sugar, as bottle gourd can further lower it.
- May interact with antihypertensive and diuretic medications, potentially potentiating their effects. Monitor blood pressure if you are on these medications.
- Overconsumption may lead to toxic effects.
- Rare allergic reactions such as skin rash after topical application have been reported.
- Excessive or bitter bottle gourd juice can cause issues like esophagitis, duodenitis, gastric ulcer, and upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage.
Side effects
- Digestive Discomfort: Regular consumption of calabash gourd juice can sometimes lead to digestive discomfort like nausea or diarrhea, especially if your digestive fire is weak.
- Toxicity: Bitter bottle gourd juice can cause severe poisoning. Symptoms include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, blood in stools, vomiting blood, shock, and even death.
- Symptoms of Toxicity: Can occur within 15 minutes to 6 hours after ingestion, including abdominal pain, vomiting, hematemesis, diarrhea and hypotension.
Interactions
- Antihypertensives and Diuretics: Bottle gourd may potentiate the effects of antihypertensive and diuretic medications. Monitor blood pressure if you are on these medications.
Clinical evidence
