Yavashuka, or barley (*Hordeum vulgare*), is a cereal grain used in Ayurveda for its nutritional and therapeutic properties. It is known for its potential benefits in managing metabolic disorders, digestive health, and overall rejuvenation.

Dosage
The typical dosage is 125 mg to 500 mg in different combinations for oral intake or external application. Preparation methods
- Collection and Drying: The whole barley plant is collected, cleaned, and dried in sunlight.
- Burning to Ash: It is then burned in an iron pan in the open air until it turns to ash.
- Ash Mixture: The ash is collected and mixed with four to six times its volume of water.
- Filtration: This mixture is stirred well, left overnight, and then filtered through a cloth multiple times (3-4 times) into an iron vessel to obtain a clear supernatant liquid.
- Evaporation: The clear liquid is heated until all the water evaporates, leaving a solid powder called Yavakshara.
- Storage: The final product is stored in an airtight container.

Side effects
- Should be avoided in conditions with high Pitta or bleeding disorders.
- Men seeking infertility treatment should avoid it as it may affect sperm quality and quantity.
- Higher doses may cause a burning sensation.
- Not ideal for use in people with excessive tiredness, emaciation, or who are underweight.
- Overuse can irritate the stomach lining and cause imbalances.
- Excessive consumption may lead to bloating or flatulence due to high fiber content. Phytic acid can interfere with mineral absorption when consumed in large amounts daily, so soaking or sprouting is recommended.
Interactions
- Some Ayurvedic herbs can interact with modern medicine. If both Ayurvedic and allopathic medicines are advised together, it is best to take the allopathic medicine first, wait for 30 minutes, and then take the Ayurvedic medicine after a gap of 15–30 minutes, or as directed by the physician.
- Yava does not react with homeopathic medicine and generally goes well with supplements like multivitamin tablets and Omega 3 fatty acids.
