Preparation methods
- Bark Decoction: Boil bark powder in water, simmer, strain, and drink.
- Fruit Paste: Fresh pulp can be applied topically.
- Seed Decoctions: Seeds can be used to prepare decoctions.
- Leaf Poultice: Leaves can be used to make poultices.
Contraindications
- Pregnancy and Lactation: Due to insufficient safety data, especially for seed decoctions, pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid it.
- Children under 12: Use fruit pulp paste externally only.
- Peptic Ulcer Disease: Tannins in the herb might irritate the mucosal lining.
- Anticoagulant Therapy: Tannins can alter drug bioavailability, potentially raising bleeding risk. Consult a doctor if you are on anticoagulants.
- Liver Disease: Start with a minimal dose (e.g., 1g bark powder) and monitor liver enzymes. Overuse of high-concentration embelin extracts (≥500mg daily) without monitoring may stress liver enzymes.
- Gastrointestinal Upset: High doses of tannins (more than 10g bark) may lead to nausea or constipation.
- Allergic Dermatitis: Rare contact sensitivity to fruit pulp compounds is possible; perform a patch test before topical use.
- Pitta Imbalances: Use with caution in individuals with Pitta imbalances, as excessive consumption may aggravate Pitta-related conditions.
Side effects
- Gastrointestinal Upset: High doses of tannins may cause nausea or constipation.
- Allergic Dermatitis: Rare contact sensitivity to fruit pulp compounds. Perform a patch test before topical use.
- Hepatotoxicity Risk: Overuse of high-concentration embelin extracts without monitoring may stress liver enzymes.
- May aggravate Pitta: Overconsumption can aggravate Pitta dosha, leading to symptoms such as acidity, ulcers, heartburn, or skin irritation.
- Dehydration: Due to its drying properties, excessive use of Tinduk can lead to dehydration or exacerbate Vata imbalances.
- Digestive Disturbances: Can cause digestive issues if not used properly.
Interactions
- Anticoagulants: Tannins can alter anticoagulant absorption. People on warfarin should be cautious.
- Some Ayurvedic herbs can interact with modern medicine. If both Ayurvedic and allopathic medicines are advised together, then it is best to take Allopathic medicine first, wait for 30 minutes and then take the Ayurvedic medicine.
Clinical evidence
Animal and in vitro studies show anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and antioxidant activities. Further clinical trials are needed to confirm these effects in humans.
