Arundo donax, known as Giant Reed or Nala, is a tall perennial grass used traditionally in Ayurveda for its diuretic, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties. It is also explored for potential anti-arthritic effects.

Dosage
Decoction: 40-100 ml; Root powder: 3-6 gm; Dried stem decoction: 3–6 g; Powdered stem (Kanda churna): 2–4 g; Bhasma (ash): 250–500 mg; Churna (powder): 2–6 g; Kashaya (decoction): 10–15 g

Preparation methods
- Decoction (Kwatha): 50 to 100 ml of the decoction of the root can be used to treat low sperm count and burning sensations in the body. For fever, a decoction of Nala, Vetasa, Murva, and Devadaru is useful.
- Infusion: Cold infusion of the root (50 ml) is used to treat burning micturition and dysuria.
- Paste: Paste of the root is applied to areas affected by herpes and eczema. It can also be mixed with neem leaf paste and applied to wounds.
- Medicated Milk: The root can be boiled in cow's milk (100 ml dose) to improve breast milk quantity in lactating women.
- Dried stem decoction: Simmer 3–6 g of coarse powder in 250 ml water for 10–15 minutes.
- Alcoholic extract (tincture): Standardized to 1:5 (w/v), 20–30 drops (approx. 1 ml) up to thrice daily.
- Powdered stem (kanda churna): Mix 2–4 g with honey or warm water.
- Topical poultice: Crush fresh leaves and apply to swollen joints.
- Bhasma (ash): Char the stems, powder them, and use as directed.
- Paste: Mix ash with rose or sandalwood water for external application for sunburn.
Contraindications
- No adverse effects are known or reported after the use of Nala.
- Pregnant or nursing women should avoid it due to its diuretic intensity and lack of safety data.
- Seek advice from a physician or pharmacist before using herbal preparations.
- Use caution if you are taking other western (allopathic/modern) medicines, as some Ayurvedic herbs can interact with modern medicine. It is advisable to take Allopathic medicine first, wait for 30 minutes, and then take the Ayurvedic medicine.
- High doses can cause electrolyte imbalances and interact with prescription medications.

Side effects

- Pregnant women should avoid high doses of Bhasma, and the elderly and children under 12 need dose reduction by half.
