Matsyadani (Tamarix gallica), also known as French tamarisk, is an Ayurvedic herb traditionally used in the Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and South Asian regions. It is being researched for its potential health benefits.

Dosage
Bark Powder (Churna): 3–6 g daily, divided into two doses with warm water, post-meals for diarrhea or dysentery. Leaves dried powder: 5 to 7 g. Galls dried powder: 3 to 5 g. Decoction (Kashaya): 30–50 mL twice daily (prepared by simmering 5–10 g bark in 200 mL water until reduced by half), used for gastrointestinal upset. Decoction or Kashaya: 5 – 10 ml. Alcoholic Extract (Arishta/Tincture): 5–10 mL diluted in 50 mL water, once or twice daily for skin eruptions. Standardized extract: 250 mg capsule, 1–2 capsules daily after meals. General Dose: 1 – 2 grams in divided dose per day along with water or honey.

Preparation methods
- Bark Powder (Churna): The bark is dried and powdered.
- Decoction (Kashaya): Simmer 5–10 g of bark in 200 mL water until reduced by half.
- Alcoholic Extract (Arishta/Tincture): The bark is processed with alcohol to extract its medicinal properties.
- Topical Paste: Leaf extracts can be combined with turmeric for skin conditions.
- Mouthwash: Flower spikes can be steeped in warm water.
- Extraction: Extracts can be prepared using ethanol, methanol, or distilled water.
Contraindications
- Pregnancy: Due to a lack of safety data and the potential for tannins to stimulate the uterus, it is best to avoid Tamarix gallica during pregnancy.
- Hypersensitivity: Individuals with known allergies to plants in the Tamaricaceae family should avoid it.
- Concurrent use of strong astringents or iron supplements: Tannins in Tamarix gallica may interfere with mineral absorption.
- Electrolyte Imbalance: Use with caution in individuals on strict low-sodium diets or those with renal impairment, as it may cause electrolyte imbalances. Monitoring of serum sodium and potassium levels is advised.
Side effects
- Mild gastrointestinal discomfort at high doses (≥10 g/day) such as nausea or constipation due to excessive tannins.
- Allergic contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals. Patch-test topical pastes before widespread use.
- Electrolyte imbalance in those on strict low-sodium diets or with renal impairment. Monitor serum sodium and potassium levels.
- Use caution in renal patients as mineral salts could affect electrolyte balance.
Interactions
- Tannins may reduce the absorption of iron and certain minerals. Consult a practitioner if on mineral supplements.
- If taking along with other western (allopathic / modern) medicines, it is best to take Allopathic medicine first, wait for 30 minutes and then take the Ayurvedic medicine.
- Generally, this product goes well with most of the dietary supplements. However, if you are taking more than one product per day, please consult your doctor for an opinion.
