Catechu, derived from Senegalia catechu, is an Ayurvedic herb known for its astringent, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. It has been traditionally used in oral health, skin care, and digestive health. Modern research explores its potential in managing diabetes and its antioxidant effects.

Botanical name: Senegalia catechu. Also known as: Black Catechu, Black Cutch, Cutch Tree, Dark Catechu, Gum Catechu, Khadira, Khair, Kattha.

Properties

Dosage

Powder (Churna): 1–3 grams, twice daily with warm water or honey. Decoction (Kashayam/Kwath): 10–20 grams of chips boiled down to 100–200 ml, taken once or twice daily. 5-10 grams of chips boiled in 200 ml water reduced to 50 ml, sipped warm, 1–2 times daily. 20-30 ml per day, or as directed by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner. Tablet/Extract (Khadir Ghan): 500 mg tablets, 1–2 tablets twice daily post-meal. Khadira extract - 0.5-1 gm. Oil Infusion: For topical application, 2–3 times daily for joint pain or skin lesions. Khadir Paste: Applied topically as required for skin conditions.
