Preparation methods
- Powder (Churna): Mix the powder with warm water, honey, or milk and consume. Take 30 minutes before meals for best digestive support.
- Herbal Tea: Brew as a herbal tea by steeping in hot water for 5-7 minutes.
- Decoction (Kwatha): Boil Mustak rhizomes in water, strain, and drink the decoction twice daily. Add 1 tablespoon (10 grams) of coarse powder of the herb with 2 cups of water. Boiled in open air till the total content is reduced to 1 cup. This is filtered and used.
- Oil (Taila): For hair removal, apply after shaving or waxing, or blend it into your hair removal cream. Dilute with a carrier oil before use. Gently massage the blended oil into the area where you've recently removed hair. Allow it to absorb into the skin for about 15-20 minutes. The oil can be applied twice daily for optimal results. Don't dilute Cyperus Rotundus Oil. The clinical study had patients apply 0.25 mL of the pure oil twice daily for six months after cleansing.
Contraindications
- Pregnancy: High doses (above 3g daily) should be avoided due to potential uterine stimulation.
- Nursing mothers: Use with caution and under supervision due to limited safety data.
- Hypoglycemic drugs: May enhance blood sugar-lowering effects, so monitor glucose closely.
- Bleeding disorders or anticoagulants: The oil form may have mild antiplatelet actions, so seek professional advice.
- Diabetes: Mustaka may potentiate hypoglycemic effects.
- It's always best to consult with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner or healthcare professional before adding Cyperus rotundus to your routine.
- Children under 12 should use half the adult dose.
- If you experience any unusual symptoms, stop use and consult a healthcare professional.
Side effects
- No serious side effects have been widely reported, but long-term effects on skin health and hair follicles haven't been studied extensively.
- Some individuals may experience skin irritation or allergic reactions. It is recommended to perform a patch test before extensive use.
- One study noted the only side effect was the smell of the oil.
- There's community concern about prolonged exposure being an endocrine disruptor due to its androgen-blocking properties.
Interactions
- Cyperus rotundus oil has anti-androgenic activity and may affect androgen levels, although one study found it did not affect serum testosterone.
- Blocking androgens in ER-positive breast cancers could reduce the anti-proliferative effects of androgens, potentially leading to an increased risk of cancer progression.
- Cyperene and β-selinene, the main compounds from cyperus oil, showed stronger binding than a compound already recognized as an endocrine disruptor.
- Inform your physician if you are on any medication.
Clinical evidence
Clinical trials show that *Cyperus rotundus* extract may help with weight loss and hair removal. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (96 obese participants) found that 500 mg of *Cyperus rotundus* extract plus 5 mg piperine daily for 90 days, combined with diet and exercise, resulted in significantly more weight loss and improved cholesterol levels compared to diet and exercise alone. Further studies support its use as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic agent.
